ASBU/ARABSAT Global Bouquet

Arab States Broadcasting Union and Arabsat ,the intergovernmental organization and major provider of satellite communications in the Arab world, launched this project to provide its members with a packaged service for worldwide satellite distribution. For this global distribution project, Arabsat contracted GlobeCast, the world’s leading satellite services provider, to distribute a free-to-air bouquet to every major territory in the world.

The rationale behind the ASBU global distribution project is compelling. Prior to 2004 broadcasters would work independently with different satellite vendors and satellite platforms while attempting to reach the same markets. This in turn made it problematic for audiences to receive multiple channels via different satellite platforms.

The bouquet is serving the interest of ASBU members and enabling Arabic viewers to access multiple channels via one single platform and one receiver. The channels can now reach a wider multicultural audience of millions throughout the world.

Another major factor behind the project is that by consolidating global distribution costs, participants make significant savings. Grouping channels as one package is more cost-effective than separate channels having single feeds distributed individually.

The bouquet was launched on April 1, 2004 with the participation of 7 TV Channels and 14 Radios, four years later and at the beginning of 2009  this expanded to count 14 TV Channels and 26 Radios from the Arab region.
