  Studies and Research

  Special attention is given to the studies and research sector which ASBU considers as the driving engine behind any radio and TV activity and the essential factor of success in the scientific planning for such activity. Hence, the substantial amount of research-work and study ASBU keeps carrying out on such important subjects as:

Evaluation of Arab direct satellite broadcasting channels. 

Youth and their positions vis à vis Arab radio and TV programmes. 

Cultural programmes and the issue of identity 

Evaluation of news exchange activities amongst Arab radio and TV institutions. 

Commercial advertising on Arab satellite channels and the impact of its inclusion in the programme-networks of many a TV stations.

  Documentation and Information

  One of ASBU General Directorate’s standing concerns is the promotion of information services and equipment within the union and among its member-organizations. To this effect, ample emphasis is laid on:

Developing and boosting the Union’s information-related infrastructure with a view to achieving ever-closer cooperation and complementarity in this field between the various ASBU departments 

Providing basic information directly to allow for rapid decision making. 

Developing, updating and unifying information service and equipment standards within the Union. 

Collecting specific information and data from both ASBU members and some international organizations. 

Collecting and processing books and other published and non-published documents and reports produced by relevant conferences, research work, technical reports and repertoires. 

Setting a policy for the development of data acquisition likely to serve a major work-tools in such areas as specialization objective coverage, time coverage, material format of acquired items, sources of acquisition, users’ needs etc... 

Developing ASBU data-bases and data-banks and providing opportunities for their interactive uses on the hotline. 

Creating within the Arab information network a radio and TV information system connected to Internet. 

Collecting and processing data and building up non bibliographical data bases inclusive of statistical data, guides, and terminology items of all kinds, and classifying them as follows:

statistical data bases 

Guide data bases (Arab radio and TV experts, information and communication related documentation and information units). 

Radio and TV concept and terminology data bases 

Systematic and immediate data publication and dissemination in order to ensure timely data transmission to their users. 

Establishing contacts and developing relations with Arab and international institutions with a view to facilitating exchanges of publications and expertise. 

Building and developing data bases relative to Arab intellectual production in the area of information and communication in general and of radio and television in particular. 

Applying the latest technological developments to ASBU information related activities. 

The Arab Information Network 

This network is meant to: 

Follow up the implementation of the Arab documentation and information strategy and set plans for future action in this area 

Assess the current state of information facilities available to Arab broadcasting institution and measure the extent to which they benefit from modern developments. 

Assess the performance level of human resources operating in the Arab broadcasting sector and develop their capacity to contribute to building and organizing the information society. 

Promote both traditional and automatic technical tools and use the new techniques at the disposal of ASBU and its members to raise the level of Arab data processing. 

Subscribe to world data-banks and exchange information with them in coordination with Arab broadcasting institutions 

promote international cooperation through effective participation in world information exchange programmes and growing involvement of joint projects with international bodies and institutions specialized in information related activities. 

Develop printing, publishing and distribution activities within ASBU and its members. 

Prepare repertoires, bibliographies and other analytical surveys and encourage the widest possible spread of such materials by measuring the true extent of Arab intellectual production in the area of information, communication and television in general and by translating the research work and studies carried out by information departments and research centres in the area of radio and television in particular. Such an effort greatly helps in following up the smooth and rapid flow up information.
