ASBU Delegation on a “Historic” Working Visit to the Union of the Comoros

A delegation from the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), headed by Director General Eng. Abdelrahim Suleiman, paid a working visit to the Union of the Comoros, an ASBU member, represented by the Comorian Radio and Television Authority (ORTC), from 18 to 22 January 2026.

The visit programme was marked by its richness and diversity, combining professional training, field visits, and meetings with senior officials. It once again reflected ASBU’s policy of supporting and accompanying its member organizations in their development and modernization efforts, while keeping pace with the rapid transformations taking place in the global audiovisual sector.

Training Course on the Use of Artificial Intelligence

Over five days, ASBU organized at ORTC headquarters an intensive training course on integrating artificial intelligence applications in the audiovisual sector and digital data archiving. The course was attended by 21 ORTC staff members, including journalists, producers, and engineers working for the national television channel.
The training was conducted by Eng. Samir Jemai, Head of the New Media Office at ASBU and his colleague Eng. Kais Naima. The main objective was to enable participants to master AI tools in order to improve production, automate certain technical tasks, and prepare teams to keep pace with global technological transformations.

Visit of the ASBU Director General to ORTC

The visit of ASBU Director General Eng. Abdelrahim Suleiman to the Comorian Radio and Television Authority represented one of the most important milestones of this working mission. ORTC officials described it as a “historic visit”, as it comes at a time when the Authority has launched a digital transformation process aimed at strengthening the position of Comorian national television as a modern media player at the regional level. In this context, ORTC places great reliance on the support and accompaniment of ASBU, which is leading the media digital transformation process in the Arab world.

This was emphasized by Mr. Hablani Othmani, Director General of ORTC, during the reception ceremony held in honor of the ASBU delegation. He added that ORTC is proud of its membership in ASBU and determined to activate and energize its role within the organization to ensure optimal benefit from the high-quality services offered by ASBU to its members, as well as from the serious opportunities available to engage in a continuous modernization process.

For his part, ASBU Director General Eng. Abdelrahim Suleiman stated that he was keen to visit the various departments of ORTC in order to closely observe work processes and assess the realities on the ground. This allowed for an accurate identification of needs and the establishment of a support programme for ORTC, including:
  • - Professional training for ORTC staff
  • - Support in making optimal use of ASBU’s cloud network
  • - Providing equipment that will contribute to the development of ORTC’s programme and sports productions

Meetings with High-Level Officials

The working visit also included several meetings with senior Comorian officials and visits to a number of national institutions to explore ways of benefiting from ASBU’s expertise in developing media and communication policies.
In this context, the ASBU Director General visited the Comorian Parliament, where he met with the First Deputy Speaker. Discussions focused in particular on the possibilities for developing parliamentary media through permanent journalistic and technical teams gradually acquiring this specialization.

He also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Union of the Comoros, where discussions centered on the important regional role played by ASBU as one of the key organizations of joint Arab action, and on ways for the Comoros to make optimal use of this role.
In addition, the Director General held a meeting with the Comorian Minister of Information, during which prospects for cooperation were discussed, particularly in the fields of media, institutional communication, and the production of educational and social media content, in light of the existing political will to modernize public media.
The field visits further included the National Center for Documentation and Scientific Research and Imam Al-Shafi‘i University, where discussions addressed possibilities for developing media and institutional communication, as well as preserving archives and heritage through the use of modern technologies.
