ASBU Executive Council denounces U.S. decision, Calls for Arab media solidarity day with Jerusalem

In reaction to the serious developments taking place in the Arab region, the ASBU Executive Council issued the following statement: "The Executive Council of the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) held in Tunis on 9 and 10 December 2017 at its 98th meeting:

•    Expresses strong disapproval of the US President Donald Trump's decision to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognize it as the capital of Israel. It considers that this unjust decision deeply impairs the spiritual and civilized status of the holy city, and the historical and legal status fully recognized by international conventions.

•    Stresses the serious threats that will undermine efforts to find a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, thus destroying the future of the Middle East peace process. It constitutes a flagrant violation of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, who are courageously fighting and making the greatest sacrifices to achieve their aspirations for freedom, independence and full sovereignty.

•    The Executive Council considers this unjust decision to be a clear alignment from the American administration to the Israeli occupation authorities and a blatant assault on the feelings of Arabs, Muslims and all peace-loving people. It warns against its implementation in anticipation of its dire consequences on stability and security in the Arab region in particular, pushing it towards further tension and opening the door to the ramping phenomenon of extremism and terrorism.

•    The Executive Council calls on all Arab Radio and Television corporations and other Arab and international media institutions to act urgently and widely to denigrate this resolution and to respond firmly to its grave consequences by using all media means and forms available.
•    It also calls on them to assume their responsibilities in these delicate circumstances, to support the just cause of Palestine and to affirm the genuine Arab character of Jerusalem and the obligation to preserve the status quo, consistentently with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
•    The Executive Council declares that the Arab States Broadcasting Union will use all its media and advanced technological capabilities to expose this shameful decision and explore all its dimensions. It continues to exert all efforts to defend Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine and renews its absolute solidarity with its heroic people.

The Council also decided to:

•    Invite member corporations to intensify program and news exchanges to cover and keep pace with popular movements, political and diplomatic efforts supporting the brotherly Palestinian people and opposing the American decision to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and transfer the US Embassy to occupied Jerusalem, It urges them to provide programs and reports on Al Quds Al Sharif through the exchange system to the benefit of member corporations and professional associations in Africa, Europe and Asia, in order to launch a joint Arab media campaign to voice the Arab concerns against this unjust decision, iolating  international legitimacy and international conventions.

•    Call on ASBU General Directorate and on Arab corporations to adopt a proposal to organize a unified Arab media day on occupied Jerusalem, therefore sending a strong message to the whole world of support to the Palestinian people rejecting and fighting the American decision, with all Arab countries and peoples ligning up with the legitimate movements of the Palestinian people and Al-Quds Al-Sharif. They shall coordinate efforts with the General Authority for Palestinian Radio and Television to determine the appropriate mechanism and requirements of organizing such unified media day.

•    The General Authority for Palestinian Radio and Television confirms its willingness to provide all the visual material, reports and media coverage of developments in the Palestinian territories and of events and repercussions resulting from the American decision, as fully covered by its correspondents in all Palestinian cities, as well as to  provide all resources available for the success of this media day dedicated to Al-Quds Sharif.

•    Invite member corporations to visit Jerusalem in this exceptional circumstance to express ASBU’ss absolute solidarity with the Palestinian people in defending Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.
